The mission of this magazine is the same as it was in 1993 when it was founded,' he told me. 'We're NOT about technology -- we're about how technology is changing the world.' He explained that Wired has two objectives for all of its stories: 'Amaze us, and tell us something we've never seen before, in a way we've never seen before.'"

Ficou bom. Leia aqui o texto "How I fell in love with Wikipedia". A chamada do jornal ficou assim: "It's free, boasts 2.2m articles and is available in 250 languages - no wonder the online encyclopedia is one of the most popular sites on the internet. Its open-content policy - allowing anyone to edit its entries - attracts fans and vandals, but, says the author Nicholson Baker, that's precisely what makes it such fun. He explains how he began editing entries - and soon developed an advanced Wikipedia dependency".

Seremos nômades
Recomendo muito a leitura deste texto da nova edição da Economist: "Our Nomadic Future -- Prepare to see less of your office, more of your family -- and still perhaps be unhappy" (algo como "Nosso Futuro Nômade -- Prepare-se para ver menos o seu escritório e mais a sua família -- e ainda assim, talvez, ser infeliz". Um trecho: "Will it be a better life? In some ways, yes. Digital nomadism will liberate ever more knowledge workers from the cubicle prisons of Dilbert cartoons. But the old tyranny of place could become a new tyranny of time, as nomads who are 'always on' all too often end up—mentally—anywhere but here (wherever here may be). As for friends and family, permanent mobile connectivity could have the same effect as nomadism: it might bring you much closer to family and friends, but it may make it harder to bring in outsiders. It might isolate cliques. Sociologists fret about constant e-mailers and texters losing the everyday connections to casual acquaintances or strangers who may be sitting next to them in the café or on the bus." Será?

"Plástico-bolha eterno"
"Since its release at the end of last year, two million of the toys have been sold in a country in which bubble wrap popping is regarded not merely as a diversion from boredom but as an antidote to stress", diz o correspondente do jornal no Japão.

Deixo um trecho grande, vale a pena: "They work long hours, often to exhaustion. Many are paid by the piece — not garments, but blog posts. This is the digital-era sweatshop. You may know it by a different name: home.A growing work force of home-office laborers and entrepreneurs, armed with computers and smartphones and wired to the hilt, are toiling under great physical and emotional stress created by the around-the-clock Internet economy that demands a constant stream of news and comment.
Of course, the bloggers can work elsewhere, and they profess a love of the nonstop action and perhaps the chance to create a global media outlet without a major up-front investment. At the same time, some are starting to wonder if something has gone very wrong. In the last few months, two among their ranks have died suddenly. (...) Other bloggers complain of weight loss or gain, sleep disorders, exhaustion and other maladies born of the nonstop strain of producing for a news and information cycle that is as always-on as the Internet."

"New Yorker Conference"

As crianças e a internet
When should kids be introduced to the digital world?"

Um trecho: "Apple's successes in the years since Jobs' return — iMac, iPod, iPhone — suggest an alternate vision to the worker-is-always-right school of management. In Cupertino, innovation doesn't come from coddling employees and collecting whatever froth rises to the surface; it is the product of an intense, hard-fought process, where people's feelings are irrelevant. Some management theorists are coming around to Apple's way of thinking. 'A certain type of forcefulness and perseverance is sometimes helpful when tackling large, intractable problems,' says Roderick Kramer, a social psychologist at Stanford who wrote an appreciation of 'great intimidators' — including Jobs — for the February 2006 Harvard Business Review."
Mossberg explica como funciona: "this $400 product looks a lot like units from better-known firms (...) Like them, it uses GPS satellite signals to locate your car on an easily seen map, and to route you to destinations and places of interest, using both visual and spoken instructions. But, unlike any other in-car navigation device I've seen, each Dash Express (...) becomes part of a network, connected to the company via the Internet. Each device not only receives and displays information, but transmits it as well, acting as a "probe," as Dash calls it, to measure local traffic speeds. This information is compiled by the company and then broadcast back to all other Dash units in your area, almost instantly painting streets on your map with color codes to indicate traffic speeds."

A definição deles: "GeeksOn is a weekly show created by geeks, for geeks, covering topics that geeks like to talk about. Movies, Sci-fi, Video Games, Comics, TV, Internet, Board Games, RPGs.... it's all here at Geekson.com." Vale olhar.

Assista.
A sensação underground da web
